Choosing the Right Size Ceiling Fan for Your Room

Choosing the Right Size Ceiling Fan for Your Room

I've noticed a few questions floating around about choosing the perfect size ceiling fan for different rooms. It's a great question, and I'm here to help with a handy chart to guide you!

Choosing a Fan for Your Room Size

- Small Rooms (Up to 8x10): For laundry rooms, mudrooms, or other compact spaces, a fan between 29 and 39 inches in blade span will circulate air effectively.

- Large Rooms (Up to 10x20): Larger rooms like living rooms, bedrooms or kitchens can handle a fan between 42 and 54 inches in blade span.

- Great Rooms (Up to 20x20): For expansive rooms or great rooms, consider a fan 56 inches or larger in blade span to ensure proper airflow.

Don't Forget Ceiling Height!

In addition to room size, your ceiling height also plays a crucial role in fan selection. If your ceilings are over 9 feet, you’re going to want a downrod.

A downrod is essentially an extension pipe that lets you hang the ceiling fan lower into the room to maximize the airflow. While most fans, like the Malden in my collection with Hunter, come with a downrod included (usually between 2-6 inches long), you may need a longer downrod.

How to Choose the Right Downrod Size

The key to choosing the right downrod size is to get the ceiling fan to hang at the ideal height of 8-9 feet from the floor. Here's a simple formula to help you calculate the downrod length you need: Downrod length = Ceiling Height (in fee) - 9 feet (includes the fan height)

For instance, if your ceiling is 12 feet high, you'd need a 3-foot downrod for your fan at the recommended height.

I hope this helps! With the help of this guide, you can now choose the perfect size ceiling fan to keep your rooms comfortable and stylish. Make sure to check out the Malden and the rest of the Jasmine Roth + Hunter lighting collection here!
