Help! I Wrecked My House Season 4, Episode 10: Classic Minimalist
January 10 2024
Project Overview:
THE HOMEOWNER:
Sarah and Brian
THE BUDGET:
$300K
THE STORY:
Sarah and Brian live in a three bedroom, two bath home with their six kids. The house was Brian’s grandparent’s and it has been in the family for generations. They’re using every centimeter of this space and need to create a better living environment. They’ve been saving for years to renovate this house, because they want it to be their forever home. This was one of the biggest projects I’ve done and one of the smallest houses! We planned to turn the garage into the primary bedroom (they wanted to purge unused items and move bikes and surfboards to a shed on the side of the house) and the new spacewould be considered an ADU. I had a lot of work to do in 10 weeks, and spoiler, I ended up needing an extra three weeks to get this project done.
THE PLAN:
With six kids running around the house, Sarah expressed her desire for a very calming, neutral, and earthy color palette in the home. I decided to go with a classic minimalist look so that nothing in the home would compete for attention. I wanted this to be a home that would continue to stay in the family for generations to come and for Sarah and Brian to comfortably raise their family in.

I’m curious why you didn’t give the laundry color in your paint list. I know you mixed two for the final color. Can you give us the final formula? Thanks.

I have to ask – why a garage conversion and not a second floor?
